Certain moments either crush us or mold us into who we were meant to be all along.Losing a parent at a young age is the kind of experience that would shatter even the best of us for good. However, the survival of one such tragedy actually sowed the seeds for what would become San Antonio, TX hard rock band Kingdom Collapse.Though the band formally started in 2020, vocalist Jonathan Norris and bassist Aaron Smith grew up together as childhood friends. At eight-years-old, Jonathan tragically lost his father. In order to cope, he immediately retreated into music and the embrace of a small community—which included Aaron’s family. This was the turning point where both boys realized the power of friendship, the power of music, and their potential together. However, it’s just one of many experiences they’ve drawn on as fodder for their 2026 full-length debut, the aptly titled Survivor [Mascot Records].“I saw my father die right in front of my eyes,” Jonathan sighs. “For me, the journey of survival started at the very moment when I was dialing 911 and telling the operator,‘I think my dad is dead’. I didn’t even know what was happening. I didn’t know if he would make it. I didn’t even know if I would even make it. In some ways, that darkness has never left. Music became my light. I connected with it, and it gave me hope for the future. Kingdom Collapse is a band that carries that torch. We’re not a band dying to be famous. We’re not a band dying to be rich. We’re a band that has something to say—something that is real because life can drag us all through hell and back if we let it. We want our songs to be the glimmer of hope that gives the listener a reason to live to see another day.”Music has certainly done that for the members of Kingdom Collapse.Jonathan and Aaron share a bond that they trace back to“flag football in first grade.”When faced with this tremendousl oss, Jonathan grabbed his headphones first and eventually picked up a microphone later. Remaining close, he and Aaron each pursued music individually through high school. They made the rounds in local bands and even collaborated a fewtimes on short-lived projects. When they finally joined forces in Kingdom Collapse, it was as if everything they’d gone through had prepared them tomake a statement together. Jonathan tapped Aaron to play bass, and they rounded out the lineup by welcoming guitarist David Work and drummer Gaston Flores into the fold. They mined the same well of inspiration, nodding to the likes of Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Creed, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, and Korn. Despite their collective passion for all things hard rock and heavy metal, the local scene didn’t exactly welcome them with open arms...“Where we’re from, virtually everybody listens to and plays country music,” Aaron comments. “That’s not who we are orwhat we’re doing though, but everyone would kind of fuck with us. We’d always hear,‘Why don’t y’all play George Straitor Tim McGraw or Hank Williams?’It’s a common thing. It’s been an uphill battle locally. ”Thankfully, their quiet and devoted grind paid off because their breakout track “Uprise” resonated on a global scale, gathering 5 million-plus Spotify streams and bulldozing the way for 2022’s independent Unbreakable EP. The latterhoused their biggest single to date “Unbreakable,” which has generated north of 11 million Spotify streams. Not only didit reach #1 on Octane, but it has notably stayed in rotation for five years and counting. Unafraid to put in the work, thefour-piece didn’t bother with day jobs and went all-in on music instead, hitting the road for hundreds of shows a year. They shared stages with bands like Three Days Grace, Nothing More and From Ashes To New. In 2025, they caught the attention of Mascot Records North America President Ron Burman, and inked a deal with the label. Wasting no time, theygot right to work on Survivor with Jonathan at the helm as producer. Throughout the process, they kept their growing audience in mind, pulling no punches and cutting right to the core with straight-forward lyrics and neck-snapping grooves.
