Additional Information

This Valentine’s Day, Jazz Standard is the place to be when vocalist Kate McGarry brings to life her new album, The Subject Tonight Is Love, coming 2/2 from Binxtown Records. Over the course of a dozen conceptually–linked songs, the collective group of McGarry, Keith Ganz, and Gary Versace investigate the concept of love in its many forms and from several different perspectives. The formidable talents of these GRAMMY-nominated musicians are in full bloom on this ambitious outing. Ganz shines on nylon, steel, electric and bass guitars while Versace moves masterfully between piano, electric keyboard, organ and accordion.

A gentle, diaristic take on the classic “Secret Love” captures the song’s shift from the surreptitious to the celebratory. Their breezy, intimate “Gone With the Wind” meets the notion of lost love with a resigned, “easy come, easy go” shrug, while Keith Ganz’s hushed, intimate arrangement of “My Funny Valentine” is a perfect fit for McGarry’s poignant delivery. Other highlights include compositions by Benny Golson and Kenny Dorham (“Fair Weather”) and Egberto Gismonti (“Playing Palhaco,” with new lyrics by Jo Lawry), and a reworking of “She Always Will,” a song that this trio first recorded a decade earlier on Kate’s acclaimed album The Target (Palmetto, 2007). “While the world has no shortage of fine female singers, few have the musical depth, sense of passion and artistic ambitions of the divine Kate McGarry.” (All About Jazz)
