The South African born comic began his career as the first black stand-up comedian in the 1998 Smirnoff International Comedy Festival in Cape Town. He was the only black person on stage out of 44 comics. “I’d never had experience in stand-up comedy,” recalls David, “the first comedy show I ever saw was the first one I was in.” And for the next few years David was a headliner in this international comedy festival.
In 1998 David – who had begun to study electrical engineering in 1995 before dropping it for acting at the University of Cape Town in 1996 then pursuing a Performers Diploma in Speech and Drama – performed The Rainbow Nation Tour, his first one-man show. David wrote and performed The Rainbow Nation Tour to graduates but continued with politically savvy comedy with his next play, Introducing The Peoples Comic in 2000. Of his material David says, “it isn’t all influenced by politics – and it wasn’t politically influenced back then – instead it’s always about what’s current and what was important in my life at that time.”
In 1997 David then joined forces with his university friend, comedian Kagiso Lediga
(Writer/Producer/Director - Barney Chow, Catching Feelings) and created SA’s first comedy sketch TV show, the Pure Monate Show (PMS) which aired in 2003 - 2005 on SABC1, South Africa’s leading TV Channel. The show which was inspired by In Living Colour and SNL produced the likes of Tshepo Mogale, Roni Modimola, Joey Rasdien, Chris Forrest, Riaad Moosa, David Kibuuka (Writer/Producer - The Daily Show), Loyiso Gola and Kim Engelbrecht (Dominion),.For David and his friends, the show was about a comedy sketch show because there wasn’t one in South Africa.”
David Kau started the ‘Blacks Only Comedy Show’ brand with his manager, Roddy Quinn back in 2004, which has gone on to be the biggest comedy brand in the country, and 13 years later it is a staple in the entertainment landscape of South Africa. It has since featured local and International comedians Capone, Dwayne Perkins, Ruben Paul, Marina Franklin, and Trevor Noah, with David Kau hosting.
As David Kau is about to turn 40 in 2018 and celebrate 20 years of being a stand-up comedian, He starts his first International tour of his latest one man show, Half Man Half Comic, having been a comedian for half his life. The tour starts in September in South Africa and will move into Europe, North America, UAE, and eventually Australia, Asia, and a few other countries in Africa, starting with his social media following of almost 1million followers (685k Twitter, 108k Instagram, 106k Facebook )and growing in thousands by the day, while building a new fan base world wide.
