Additional Information

The Lower East Side music venue Tonic is long gone, but it was during midnight sessions in 1999 that trumpeter Steven Bernstein convened the first iteration of his Millennial Territory Orchestra. Then as now, the MTO’s repertoire combined overlooked jazz gems of early jazz, original compositions, and radically revamped versions of songs by the Beatles, Prince, and Sly & The Family Stone (as heard on the 2011 CD MTO Plays Sly: A Tribute To Sly & The Family Stone). “The MTO is more than just nostalgic recreation,” wrote Ashley Kahn for the website of National Public Radio. “One secret to the band’s appeal is the jolt of familiarity that suddenly brings its listeners into the modern era. Bernstein arranges songs such as the Beatles’ ‘Cry Baby Cry’ to simultaneously sound updated and retro. It's his magic at mixing the strange and the familiar, the past and the present, that makes a ride with the MTO so surprising — and enjoyable.” Recreating their time as Jazz Standard’s Monday night residency band, we welcome back the MTO!
