Additional Information

The title of two–time GRAMMY Award winner Steve Slagle’s latest CD, Alto Manhattan, translates from Spanish to “Upper Manhattan” – the NYC neighborhood that he calls home. The saxophonist’s fourteenth album as a leader is also one of his most eclectic, ranging from the Afro–Cuban infused “Family” to the ballad classic “Body and Soul” to the bluesy “I Know That You Know.” A recent collab-oration with the McCoy Tyner Quartet became Slagle’s inspiration for his original composition “Inception,” which shares its title with Tyner’s classic 1962 Impulse! LP; “Holiday,” featuring Slagle’s delicate flute playing, is dedicated to the memory of the late great harmonica master Toots Thielemans. Title track “Alto Manhattan” was so nice, Steve had to play it twice: First in a burning quartet rendition, then with Joe Lovano added on tenor sax – and the great drummer Bill Stewart on both takes. Steve Slagle and his A.M. Band will bring to life the music of Alto Manhattan – for one night only, and only at Jazz Standard!
