Elvis Costello’s best early stuff from My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model crackles with an unkempt energy that masks elegant craftsmanship beneath the surface. Think of the propulsive “No Action,” or the relentless “Pump It Up.” With his backing band The Attractions, Elvis blossomed on great albums like Trust and Imperial Bedroom. The song construction got more intricate, with lyrics pushing the boundaries of acceptable ingenuity. Think of the ‘quasi-Latin’ groove of “Clubland,” the reggae beat supporting scathing phrases on “Watching The Detectives,” and the spooky artfulness of “Beyond Belief.”
There are 24 albums over 33 years to pull from, and as always, Tributosaurus will try to craft a set list that represents the depth and substance of his career. All appropriate instrumentation will be on hand to lovingly pay proper homage to some truly great material.
We’re not trying to be too sentimental like those other sticky valentines. But these Elvis Costello songs hit us in the good place.
