Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL
21 years and over
OM headlines the empty bottle tonight in support of their latest release Adviatic Songs, out this year via Drag City. Where God is Good was the first step in a more ornate and sophisticated direction for OM, Adviatic Songs achieves a level of composition that would’ve been impossible to foresee. On this album the core primary sound of OM remains, yet everything reaches further and becomes more of itself, decimating whatever drone-doom camp they'd been previously placed in with a fresh and expansive reanimation. For a band that has continually followed its own course, and stood alone in its sound and approach, Adviatic Songs for certain, is the band’s most focused, progressive document. Known primarily as the leader and lyricist of post-punk stalwarts LUNGFISH, DANIEL HIGGS's solo career has seen him explore various mediums - poetry, drawings, along with numerous albums - to seemingly no end. Eluding and defying classification throughout his 30+ year career, HIGGS's letest release is a cassette titled The Measure of Mystery, recorded in Big Sur over one night in October 2011, with sounds of both ocean and river heard faintly in the background. Annointed by many as a patron saint of artistic purity for his avoidance of PR fanfare, metanarrative or manifesto, HIGGS is a beacon of creative integrity to thousands and we're beyond excited to welcome him back to our stage. Our own BRUCE LAMONT’S last LP,Feral Songs for the Epic Decline, out last year via At A Loss was highlighted in SPIN’s “20 Best Metal Albums of 2011.” In their words, “thanks to LAMONT’S unholy army of loop pedals, Feral Songs is a dissonant, ritualistic swirl of Middle Eastern scales, mystery slams, ghostly moans, snaking reed work and acoustic guitars…equal parts bustling and bleak,” and we’re always smitten when he takes the stage here.
