Sensational singer, songwriter, producer, and actress Ms. Lauryn Hill returns to Highline Ballroom for one night only! Hill first burst onto the hip-hop scene in the '90s with the supergroup the Fugees, formed with friends Wycliffe Jean and Prakazrel "Pras" Michel while still in high school. The group's second album, The Score (1996), featured Hill's vocals on tracks like "Killing Me Softly" and sold 17 million copies. Hill also dabbled in acting throughout the '90s, appearing in soap operas and several films.
Despite her early success with Fugees, it was her groundbreaking debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, released in 1998, that turned Hill into an international superstar. Miseducation reigned at the top of the charts through the fall and winter of 1998 and garnered Hill five Grammy Awards out of 11 nominations, making her the first woman to ever win five Grammy Awards in a single year. Hill wrote, arranged, or produced almost every track on the disc, and she is credited by many critics for singlehandedly assimilating hip-hop into the mainstream music scene with this one release.
Although Hill released a follow-up album, MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, in 2002, she has curtailed her output over the last decade, only performing at large music festivals and contributing performances to mixtapes and soundtracks in lieu of releasing any additional full-length solo efforts of her own. She participated in a brief Fugees reunion in the mid-'00s, but the string of international performances failed to produce an album. Tonight at Highline Ballroom, she'll perform cuts from her iconic Miseducation album and more.
