Missouri band Water Liars hit you in that sweet spot in your spine where the Black Keys meet My Morning Jacket. There’s some rockin’ sadness on tunes like “Backbone” and “Bird of Song”, which one could say is the ultimate outgrowth of whatever the hell emo was in the 90s and 00s. Except that Water Liars aren’t rockin’ chain wallets and eyeliner. Except that sad, beautiful tunes have been around since human beings rosin’d up the bow, tightened the skin on their drums, or warmed up their voices to sing the moon to sleep. Melancholic beauty rockers from ‘round these parts, Humble Home, and Akronite Austin Craig open this Monday night session of song. While you’re at it, check out Austin’s album A Country Dark. Though he doesn’t sound a thing like him, one can’t help but feel a little bit of Steve Earle going on here. Perhaps it’s the awareness, the consciousness, the brightness in the dark?
