The term “gothic” shouldn't just be the term of mockery, conjuring kids in malls wearing thick makeup that makes them look like slightly irritable ghouls. “Gothic” has a long and noble history if you count the term's use as it refers to a kind of medieval architecture. Rather, many of us are familiar with "Gothic" applies to literature, and as this genre's influence filtered into other forms of expression, we've heard of gothic movies, music, fashion, et alia. The aim of what we'll call Gothic art is to induce feelings of shock, horror, romance, all topped off with a distinctive sense of the fantastic. Given that, all of these Cleveland bands could be lumped in with "goth"; their music, taken as a whole, delivers melodic beauty, shades of lyrical darkness, and a sense of otherworldly discovery. Veterans Morticia's Chair, Flowers in Flames (who've received some acclaim in Europe), and Frigid Touch do more than just dabble in the dark. Their music brings a hint of fear, but in doing so, that raw, sweet edge that rock n' roll really needs. If you're in need of such a sensation, we highly suggest you attend this show.
