Sun-bleached psychedelic pop trio UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA returns to the Bottle tonight for their first time since headlining here way back in October of 2011, when they were taking the indie world by storm with their fantastic debut record. Earlier this year, the Portland-based trio released their follow up, II, on the esteemed Jagjaguwar Records, to widespread and well-deserved acclaim from critics and fans alike. Initially a home-recording project of RUBAN NIELSON, UMO has evolved into a fully realized, mature band whose soulful, mind-addled psychedelia packs a punch. Lyrically, NIELSON explores his more frayed and frazzled states of mind, journeying from euphoria to despair with stops for highs, hangovers, communication failures, and all the anger and love in between. Don't miss your chance to see UMO in our intimate, AC-filled room before they hit Lollapalooza tomorrow afternoon. Some of our favorite locals, BARE MUTANTS have already opened for the likes of ROKY ERICKSON, TY SEGALL & THEE OH SEES, AFGHAN WHIGS and DIVINE FITS – you might say they’re the go-to opener, though we think they're damn strong on their own. Featuring members of THE PONYS, MANNEQUIN MEN, THE 1900s and LIKE PIONEERS, the MUTANTS return with their gorgeously laid back sound and smoke machine obsession paired with their tightly-wound, tense-yet-tranquil wall of sound. In April of 2010, NETHERFIRENDS' SHAWN ROSENBLATT's lease expired, so he packed up his life and hit the road with a seemingly impossible goal of playing a show in every State in the US, meeting like-minded musicians along the way and recording an original song dedicated, in some way, to a city in that State. The 50 Song 50 State project finished in Hawaii in April, 2011 and the first official release of the effort, Middle America, was released to much acclaim via Kilo Records last August.
