Returning after a rousing performance at last month’s Music, Friendly, Food Trucks block party, MY BLUE VALENTINE returns with their contradictory and refreshing take on sounds of yore. Imagine – if you can – BILLIE HOLIDAY at a honky-tonk, PATSY CLINE in a smoke-filled, Southern R&B juke joint, AMY WINEHOUSE, finished with rehab, dreaming of one last drink, fronting X in Exene's absence. MY BLUE VALENTINE worships at the temple of late-50's bluesmen and early-60's girl groups, bordertown Texican swing and torch-song balladry. Another fresh face currently taking New York by storm, DEVIN bucks today’s current trends and brings a time-honored, red-hot rock’n’roll aesthetic that’s reminiscent of IGGY POP, THE NEW YORK DOLLS and JACK WHITE. Channeling those rock icons and bringing classic forms that everyone understands to his songwriting, DEVIN’s debut full-length Romancing, out via Frenchkiss Records, has garnered acclaim for its hip-thrusting swagger and throwback sound that remains fresh, even as it wholeheartedly references its predecessors. Kicking things off tonight is Kentucky-bred, recent transplant JAMES SWANBERG, a youngin’ who’ll charm your pants off as he serenades your girlfriend, crooning and strumming his own jangly pop melodies off his recent recording, aptly titled Who Ordered The Pizzas.
