Description
Since arriving In New York City in 1999, Yosvany Terry “has helped redefine Latin Jazz as a complex new idiom.” (The New York Times) He was born into a musical family in Camaguey, Cuba and traces his ancestral roots to the kingdom of Dahomey or present-day Benin; the saxophonist, percussionist, and composer has long embraced the African musical and religious traditions that were a fundamental and integral part of his home life. His work cross-pollinates technical mastery with experiential vision and a drive for intercultural expression – which helps to explain his collaborations with such world–class musicians as Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Vijay Iyer, and Eddie Palmieri, to name a few. In 2015, Yosvany Terry joined the Department of Music faculty at Harvard University, where he’s a Senior Lecturer and Director of Jazz Ensembles.
