J. Michael Phillips operates with a specific mindset: “I’ve always been the type that if I'm going to do something, I don't quit until I'm the best…I didn't come here to be number two.” The rising urban country artist wrote poetry and raps to process his complicated childhood and used these artistic methods to help get him through multiple prison sentences, which started when Phillips was a teenager. During his longest and last stint, he began building his music empire and soon after getting out, he found his unique style by leaning more country than rap, as shown on his independent debut Urban Cowboy.
