“I am fucking blown away.” —Lucinda Williams
The electrifying singer-songwriter Ruby Friedman has drawn acclaim with her bravura, stops-out club performances at Portland venues like Alberta Rose Theatre, Mississippi Studios, and LaurelThirst Public House and Los Angeles clubs like the Troubadour, the Roxy, the Satellite, and the Echo.
Summing up the Portland-based, L.A.-bred musician in a 2022 profile, Willamette Week said, “You really can’t categorize Friedman’s voice, but let’s just say she truly can do it all.” She has received rave reviews from the Los Angeles Times (“POWERHOUSE”), Hits (“full-throttle talent”), and Buzzbands.la (“a thunder-and-lightning barrage of soul and nerves”).
Friedman’s uproarious original single “Ain’t Got Your Money” was featured on the hit Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks. Her track “Un4Givn” captured strong airplay on the top-rated L.A. NPR giant KCRW, KCSN and San Diego’s 91X. Her 2019 release “Teardrop Trailer,” originally written for Wynonna Judd, was produced by Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney, Randy Newman, Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos). Her 2016 album Gem, featuring 10 original compositions and flashing a bristling rock- and roots-based sound, was named one of the year’s 10 best albums by KPCC Los Angeles air personality and noted critic Steve Hochman.
Friedman’s 2022 neo-roots composition “The Book Woman’s Daughter” appeared in the video trailer for writer Kim Michele Richardson’s bestselling, like-titled novel, and was also heard in the PBS documentary The Pack Horse Librarians of Appalachia, which explored the real-life inspirations for Richardson’s work. The Book Woman’s Daughter is a companion to Richardson’s previous New York Times bestseller The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek; that volume was also promoted by a video trailer featuring an original Friedman song that was expressly commissioned by the writer.
She performed “Fire Down Below” on the trailer for the concluding 2022 season of the hit Netflix series Peaky Blinders. Friedman was the featured voice on SRGNT’s recording of “Queens,” used to promote ESPN’s 2022 women’s softball telecasts. She sang “Hunt You Down” in the Clio Award-winning trailer promoting the bestselling Sony Playstation video game Bloodborne, which has been viewed more than 8 million times on YouTube. Her voice was heard on trailers for the feature film Marshall and the Netflix series Godless.
Her original song “Drowned” was featured on FX’s hit show Sons of Anarchy, and a season-closing reading of Darrell Scott’s “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” was heard on FX’s Justified. Her original music was heard in Fox Sports’ series about World Cup soccer, Phenoms.
Friedman has opened concerts for rock ’n’ roll legend Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and Oscar-winning actor-musician Jeff Bridges, and made high-profile guest appearances with Grammy winners Scott Healy and Vince Giordano’s big bands and actor-pianist Jeff Goldblum’s jazz ensemble. She has twice appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Since she began performing in 1998, Leanne has captured diverse audiences with her music. She’s always had an ear for strong melodies and catchy hooks, and it shows in her devotion to her craft as a songwriter. Through her lyrics, she explores topics that are both personal and relatable, expressing her perspectives on relationships, personal growth, and the search for truth.
Leanne discovered her passion for music at the age of four, and she devoted her childhood to studying piano. When she pivoted to playing guitar at age 16, she fell in love with Americana music. Through evolving influences and collaborations with other musicians, her style has been infused with elements of alt-country, roots rock and blues.
The Weathered formed in 2013, bringing an influx of unique influences and styles. Having withstood a few storms in life (not to mention the Seattle rain), the band has produced a moody Pacific Northwest rock vibe, accentuated by Leanne’s hauntingly beautiful melodies. Their latest EP, Ordinary Grey, is available on all major streaming services.
In the wake of the pandemic, Leanne found her way back to the piano, her musical roots, and her most authentic self. She wrote a new collection of songs, delving into the themes of death and rebirth, pain and redemption, regret and forgiveness. A new incarnation of The Weathered formed in 2023 with lead guitarist Derek Pulvino, bassist Clint Hoyler, and drummer Ben Loshin. The band plans to return to the studio in 2023 to make a new record.
