Same Waves Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Lindsay Anderson is a master at creating mood. Having crafted intimate, expressive songs for decades as the front woman of L’altra, Anderson continues to sonically paint mystical landscapes as backdrops to her haunting voice. Blending Wurlitzer, Rhodes, piano and synths, she lyrically merges fantasy with reality, always with an intimate, autobiographic lens. She poetically shares her own truths and perspectives, especially around relationships and the illusiveness of love as she invites listeners to find themselves in the stories—to connect, relate and discover a place of solace, escape, healing and transformation. Anderson’s newest collection of work is a surreal, dark tale exploring the experience of being romantically involved with your artistic collaborator. It looks at the muse/artist dynamic when the muse is also the artist. This personal, intimate work is inspired by the love affair between surrealist painters Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst. It is a story of an artist claiming her voice and moving beyond objectification into power. Anderson will present this work as Same Waves. Whitney Johnson + Lia Kohl Lia Kohl and Whitney Johnson began improvising together in Chicago in 2018. What started with free exploration has coalesced in a set of sounds, approaches, and open compositions that take form on an upcoming record on Drag City, set to be released in early 2025. Drawing on their individual practices, Lia and Whitney have been delighted to discover their similarities and differences. Both Lia and Whitney are string players (cello and viola, respectively), composers, and sound artists based in Chicago. Both of their wide-ranging practices include solo composition and performance, installation, improvisation, and collaboration. Lia’s work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound. As Matchess, Whitney’s practice asks listeners to engage with their own skepticism and belief in the effects of sound on bodies and minds.
