We live in a society that often tries to hide the realities of war – the violence, the destruction and the toll it takes on those who survive. In the upcoming Warmamas: A Performance, Miami’s acclaimed physically integrated company Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD) tackles the stories of American mothers whose children have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in the recent conflicts there.

The piece, a full-length multimedia movement and video collaboration with artist Maria Lino based on the oral history project of the same name, will have its world premiere performances Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, at Wynwood’s The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

The Warmamas oral history project itself was founded six years ago by Patricia Figueroa Sowers as a platform for all mothers to tell their stories and have them documented as an essential part of our country's history. The original interviews are archived at the University of Miami’s Otto Richter Library in the Story Corps/Warmamas Community Archive.
