Description
Jazz lost one of its great pianists, bandleaders and educators when Geri Allen died in June 2017 at the much too young age of 60. “Perhaps more than any other pianist,” wrote Giovanni Russonello in his New York Times obituary, “Ms. Allen’s style — harmonically refracted and rhythmically complex, but also fluid — formed a bridge between jazz’s halcyon midcentury period and its diffuse present.” Veteran drummer Ralph Peterson Jr.’s association with Geri Allen dates back some 30 years: They gigged and recorded together in two Peterson–led groups, the “V” (for Volition) quintet and the trio called Triangular. Pianist Orrin Evans made his recording debut as a leader in 1995 (The Trio) and since then has released some two–dozen album; in February 2016, Evans commandeered our stage with three different groups including a trio, a quartet with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and his mighty Captain Black Big Band. At the end of 2017, he joined The Bad Plus when founding pianist Ethan Iverson departed for a solo career. Rounding out this version of Triangular is bassist Luques Curtis: a recipient of the 2016 Down Beat Critics Poll award for “Rising Star” bassist, a co-owner of indie label Truth Revolution Records, and a veteran of stage and studio sessions with such leaders as Eddie Palmieri, Gary Burton, Brian Lynch, Christian Scott, and Etienne Charles, among others.  Ralph Peterson - drums Orrin Evans - piano Luques Curtis - bass
