THIEF is the Los Angeles-based dark electronic project of multi-instrumentalist Dylan Neal, formerly of the San Francisco experimental black metal outfit BOTANIST. Described as "what happens when Portishead and Nine Inch Nails have sex in a haunted church," THIEF merges trip hop, industrial, metal and experimental electronics with manipulated sacred chant and choral samples to create an immersive sound THIEF has dubbed "Dungeon Pop", a besoke sound that floats between ethereal choirs, pulverizing rhythms, and towering walls of sound.
Since its inception, THIEF has cultivated a devoted underground following through its singular blend of crushing electronics, haunting atmosphere, and emotionally charged songwriting, carving out a distinctive voice that bridges the worlds of dark electronics and heavy music. The project's work has been featured by outlets including Decibel and NOISEY, earning recognition for bringing an uncompromising electronic vision into spaces traditionally occupied by metal.
Under the THIEF banner, Dylan has released Thieves Hymn in D Minor (2016), Map of Lost Keys (2019), The 16 Deaths of My Master (2021), and Bleed, Memory (2024). A fifth full-length album is slated for release in 2026, continuing the project's evolution while remaining rooted in its signature collision of beauty, brutality, and sacred decay.
