In the early 90’s, “The Steely Damned” was assembled in San Diego to faithfully recreate live, the impeccable studio recordings of Steely Dan. As Steely Dan had never toured at the time, it was both challenging and rewarding to arrange and perform these incredible songs and recordings, to great local and national acclaim. After a brief hiatus in 2012, the group reformed and is now known as “The Steely Damned 2.”
Representing a virtual cream of the crop of local musicians this 14-piece band doesn’t attempt to look or dress like Steely Dan, instead they focus on the music, making sure that every note and nuance of these cerebral yet tasty iconic recordings are in place. From songs like “Reelin’ In The Years” to “Aja.” This includes everything from the instrumentation, to the grooves, the incredible guitar, sax and keyboard solos—along with faithful lead and background vocals. Of course, there is also room to extend and enhance the already epic arrangements, which the band performs with great energy and enthusiasm, and which keeps TSD2 fans coming back decade after decade.
Led by guitar wizard Hank Easton, the band is a true all-star group of hometown heroes, featuring Larry Grano, Ruby Presnell, Tripp Sprague, Gary Taylor, Jim Reeves, Rob Gironda, Kevin Esposito, Doug Meeuwson, Chuck Phillips, Mark DeCerbo, Doug Booth, Sofia Easton, Kate Sprague and soundman Mitch Grant. Because most of the musicians are busy in other working bands, TSD2 only perform a handful of concerts a year, often selling out, so get your tickets early and get ready to be wowed!
