The Scientists are the ultimate cult band!

Mysterious, undefinable and yet many quite distinct things to many people.

Some blame them for Grunge, some think they’re a power pop band, some think they’re experimental. Tav Falco describes them in Ghosts Behind The Sun thus:

“Mercurial individuals who’s science is strictly alchemical.”

Originating in Perth Western Australia in the beginnings of Post Punk they travelled to Sydney, then London cutting a swathe through the indie scene throughout the 1980s only to vanish. Sited as a seminal influence by so many – Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Mudhoney, Nirvana the band had to return some time.

In 2018 they’ve returned recorded 3 singles, Mini Mini Mini, Braindead, and a soon to be released EP on In The Red called 9H20.SiO2.

They made their first trip to the USA last year confirming what people suspect. They are totally unique… distinct from other bands and sound as brutal now as ever. Not to be missed!

    Alternative Rock

The Scientists formed in Perth in 1978, later based themselves in Sydney and eventually London. Sometimes referred to as 'Swamp Rock', their music is dark, murky, brooding, often menacing; often credited for inspiring later waves of international grunge (particularly Seattle bands of the 80s & 90s), blues-punk, garage-punk and other forms of darker rock music. Their earliest music however was in the style of up-tempo power-pop; akin perhaps to bands like The Buzzcocks & The Ramones.

The Scientists have several periods of activity: most notably between 1978 to 1987, releasing 7 albums and many singles; with reunion tours in the mid 90s and early 00s onwards including performances at festivals such as All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) in the UK and USA.

Their song "We Had Love" was re-popularised when it was used in the 2008 UK gangsta movie RockNRolla. Members have been involved with other notable bands including: Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, the Beasts of Bourbon & The Darling Downs with Ron Peno of Died Pretty.
