THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART is set to release their third LP, Days of Abandon, next month on Force Field. If their last two albums are anything to go by, both receiving the coveted BNM tag from Pitchfork and critical acclaim from The New York Times, then we’re in for a real treat. Their new single, "Simple and Sure," is just that: A simple and sure song that fills you with hope and makes you feel like the sun is exploding out of your chest, immersing everyone within 50 ft of you in its bright, happy, feel-good rays. Its like catching ROBERT SMITH on a really, really, really good day. THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART is making its return to the Empty Bottle an important one; they’ve stripped down their sound and switched their focus to the songwriting. “I wanted the album to be powerful without being loud. Simply stepping on a fuzz pedal every 14 seconds felt like a crutch, though a pretty cool sounding crutch. I didn’t want to hide these songs behind walls of distortion or elaborate studio wizardry,” said front man KIP BERMAN. The end product is an album that is as confident as it is cathartic. Born from the ambient, dreamscapes of JESSICA WEISS, FEAR OF MEN has evolved from an extension of work WEISS was making for her art degree to a four piece, dream-pop outfit. Unafraid to mix pop sensibilities and cold sonic atmospheres with literary influence, FEAR OF MEN is an act that will leave you thinking. Making their Bottle debut just days after their U.S. release of their first full-length album, LOOM, FEAR OF MEN has perfected their woozy sound, falling somewhere between the moody shoegaze of '90s acts like CURVE and LUSH and the beachy indie currents of their own era. Opening up the night is ABLEBODY, the solo project of the former PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART and DEPRECIATION GUILD guitarist CHRISTOPH HOCHHEIM. HOCHHEIM has been releasing music under this moniker since 2011, dishing out an EP of covers, crafting remixes and demoing original material via Bandcamp and SoundCloud. Like playing percussion jazz tapes in a Chinese garden or walking half-awake through an Eastern Emporium, ABLEBODY presents sentimental trails of creative resolve.

    Do The Pains of Being Pure At Heart belong? After garnering widespread acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork and NME to countless indiepop forums, blogs and even Live Journals for their out-of-nowhere s/t 2009 Slumberland debut, have The Pains made the kind of record that will matter to the kind of people to whom records still matter?

    From the opening explosions of electric guitar on "Belong" ("We don't") and the sumptuously synthetic dance pop perfection of "The Body" to the prom-in-heaven chorus of "Even in Dreams" and the closing moments of the uncommonly sincere and affecting "Strange" ("…and dreams can still come true") the answer is an unqualified, resounding (and damn good sounding) "Yes."

    Having moved beyond mimicking, albeit exquisitely, their impressive record collections, this album is a celebration of the possibilities of pop from New York City's pre-eminent indiepop believers. It is as much an affirmative answer to "can they" (rise above their influences? Capture the magic of their debut without repeating it? Use color on their album sleeves?) as it opens the door to the more difficult question of "how do they?"

    Or more precisely, how do they make such affecting, yet unaffected pop music? How do they sound at once confidently vulnerable and carelessly thoughtful? How does a band on Slumberland make a record with two of the most recognized producers in the world and come out the other end sounding even more like themselves than before? The dichotomies are daunting, but their resolution on Belong is nothing short of stunning.
