Scott The Hoople and his THE MINUS 5 will be ringing in the holiday season, Portland-style, armed with the winter classic LP Dear December as well as a sled-full of other Christmas/Hannukah/Festivus swing-alongs. Featuring members of The Decemberists, Eyelids, Casey Neill, etc. -- a veritable All-Stars-of-Bethlehem.

Special guests: THE DELINES! Willy Vlautin, Amy Boone, and friends are no stranger to a party -- why, they'll be drinking for both bands! Welcome 'em back from Europe, before they go over there again, where they sell out all over the place.

The Minus 5's Dear December, a humble offering of new Scott McCaughey-penned holiday classics, came out November 2017 (just a week after Scott's rather interruptive stroke). Scott had composed a few holiday numbers to submit to a well-known artist's prospective holiday album (and The Monkees did end up recording McCaughey/Buck's "Christmas Party" as their title track). He became so inspired by the task that he wrote an album's worth of material and decided to rush that record out with his group, The Minus 5, which included co-captain Peter Buck and drummer Joe Adragna as main co-conspirators.

"I wanted to evoke the classic Christmas album feeling without leaning too heavily on sweet baby Jesus and good ol' Little St. Nick," says McCaughey. "Yet I also wanted to curb my cynical tendencies as well. I feel we succeeded on both counts, and the results are a holiday record that should work for any and all."

The resulting album, Dear December, brings holiday cheer and a fresh batch of seasonal songs that include the generous talents of Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Mike Mills, Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies, Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Chuck Prophet, M. Ward, Tammy Ealom (Dressy Bessy), Kurt Bloch, Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor.

    The Minus 5

    Pop Rock

a rock/folk/pop collective captained by Scott McCaughey (see: "Scott McCaughey" c/o "The Internet", for further reliable information), with Peter Buck often aboard as navigation officer. By design from its inception, the line-up for recordings and live appearances is completely fluid, dependent on musician availability, whim, and wind direction. Collaborators regularly feature friends from R.E.M. (as it once were), Wilco, Decemberists, Posies, and literally hundreds and hundreds of other recalcitrant comrade combos. Everyone gives their all, and no one need be counted on.

On Record Store Day, April 19, 2014, the Minus 5 released its ninth official long-player, the all-new five-LP, 57-song, 211-minute set Scott The Hoople In The Dungeon Of Horror, on long-time home Yep Roc Records. The sprawling but concise work benefits from the participation of both the usual and new suspects, like John Moen, Jeff Tweedy, Bill Rieflin, Linda Pitmon, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, Ian McLagan, Laura Gibson, Joe Adragna, Ezra Holbrook, Wesley Stace, Casey Neill and more. It was limited to a 750-copy vinyl run (including 100 colored) in a deluxe book-style bound album. It was mined/plundered for two CD/LP releases, Dungeon Gold (2015), and Of Monkees And Men (2016). November 2017 saw the Minus 5's entry in the holiday sweepstakes, Dear December, which was conveniently released a week after Scott fell down on Kearney Street in San Francisco.

Stroke Manor came to life in a dazzling 2019 Record Store Day package, followed soonly by CD and "regular" vinyl, as well as a summer spate of touring, with M5 line-ups including Peter Buck, Linda Pitmon, Kurt Bloch, Mike Mills, Casey Neill, Jenny Conlee, Jim Talstra, Alia Farah, Paulie Pulvirenti, Steve Drizos, and guests Steve Wynn, Kelli Hogan, Mike Giblin, Mike Ritt, John Perrin... etc. Solid Sound was epic. Camper's Camp-out was smoldering. Chicago was twice vanquished. Portland was quite honestly magical. As were most other stops along the way.

And now Mott ('74 version) is back for more. The Minus 5 is all IN. Still, Scott The Hoople's future remains uncertain. As does YOURS.

    The Delines

    Country Soul

Retro country soul from novelist/songwriter Willy Vlautin, Amy Boone (Damnations), Sean Oldham (Richmond Fontaine), Freddy Trujillo, Cory Gray, and Tucker Jackson.
The name "The Delines" came to Willy in a dream. He claims we were playing a nice venue somewhere and it was written across the kick drum. The idea for the band itself came long before on a tour with Richmond Fontaine. Amy was singing the female roles from the High Country and Post to Wire, originally sung by her sister Deborah. Backstage Amy would sing soul and opera numbers to warm up and get her mind off the psycho logger tunes and a-holes she was locked in a van with. Some of the soul singing must have found its way into Willy's consciousness however and upon returning home he penned several songs he hoped Amy would sing. Willy sneaked over to John's studio and whipped out some demos to share with Amy and Sean. They dug em! Amy chose her keys and Tucker came over to work out parts in the basement. We called Freddy in to lay down the bass and Jenny to play rhodes and organ. Finally we got Amy up from Austin and after some quality time in the basement hit the studio. Collin put down a little cello and John some baritone guitar. Crow sent us up backing vocals that Amy and Deb had done down in Austin. John mixed them all up nice here in Portland and voilà "Colfax" was born. We are planning to release May 2014 on Decor and El Cortez Records.
