The Crocodile Presents: Mild Orange, Early Internet

  • Mild Orange

    Mild Orange

    Indie Pop

The colour orange can cause one to experience a heightened sense of optimism, a boost in aspiration, and a stimulation of warmth and happiness. Mild Orange is an eclectic of 'melting melodies' – an energy and vibrancy derived from a lust for smooth sounds.

The soundbaby, Mild Orange, was born in 2017 in Dunedin, New Zealand, by early childhood friends Josh Mehrtens (vocals/guitar/production) and Josh Reid (lead guitar), and soon joined by good pals and experienced musicians, Tom Kelk (bass) and Jack Ferguson (drums).

Josh & Josh first became friends at age two, but were separated due to their families relocating. 19 years later, the pair oddly and unknowingly found themselves living together in a strange flat housing ten men, two lizards, two rabbits and one chicken all under one roof in their third year at university. Josh & Josh had not realised that they knew each other well as children until soon after they had bonded over their passion for music and began writing the bones of their debut album Foreplay. The full project came into fruition once Tom and Jack were on board, and the signature sound was created.

Foreplay was released independently April 18, 2018, receiving worldwide attention, with tracks quickly reaching millions of views on YouTube. The Mild Orange boys recorded Foreplay themselves in their practice room and in their flat in Dunedin. Front man Josh Mehrtens, then spent six months producing and mixing the project in his bedroom and at the library.

Mild Orange asks: “melt with us” – an expression to spark the enjoyment, creation, and participation in lovely experiences. The powerful, and at times pensive live show of the Mild Orange experience, seeks to do so.

    Dream Pop

“…a sharp set of nostalgic, melancholic, dreamy indie-pop.” --KEXP

"Early Internet specializes in quiet pop gems." --Thrillist

"Drenched in nostalgia...a driving, forward leap into a hazy and wishful landscape." --Glasse Factory

"A contemporary must-listen gem." --Wolf in a Suit

You're Just In Time To Miss Everything is the debut album from Early Internet; the moniker for Seattle-based indie dream pop artist, Dean Stafford.

As its title suggests, the album lends itself to feelings of missed windows of opportunity, whether it's through bad timing, aging, generational shortcomings, or misfortune in general.

There are parallels drawn between the state of the world today and the isolation it has spawned -- a longing for past places, events, and people.

Despite this, the songs don’t dwell in melancholy, but rather exist in a bittersweet and melodic universe reminiscent of early aughts staples like Jimmy Eat World or Death Cab for Cutie. The songs of You're Just In Time To Miss Everything might serve well as the backdrop for a coming of age film -- if one were coming of age in one's 30s (no judgment).

Regardless of its subject matter, Stafford maintains a conscious effort to arrive at his unanswered questions through a lens of cautious optimism.

The album is ultimately an acknowledgment of a need to accept one's circumstances as they are, while not allowing them to rob oneself of happiness. It's an affirmation to live in the present moment, where everything actually is.

You're Just In Time To Miss Everything is available now on streaming, vinyl, and CD.
