    The Coup were one of the most overtly political bands in rap history. Formed in the early '90s, the Coup were obviously influenced by the black power rhetoric of "conscious" rappers like Public Enemy and KRS-One, but they were perhaps even more inspired by a heavy-duty, leftist reading list that included Marx and Mao. Lead rapper/producer Boots (born Raymond Riley) was involved in political activism long before he was a musician; his fervent dedication to social change was the overriding influence on every Coup album. Second rapper E-Roc and DJ Pam the Funkstress rounded out the trio. Released in 1993, the Coup's debut album, Kill My Landlord, was a highly charged blend of leftist resistance and '70s funk. If it had been released a mere four or five years earlier, the highly politicized Kill My Landlord might have gained the Coup nationwide notoriety and platinum album sales. As it was, gangsta rap was all the rage, and Kill My Landlord achieved only moderate sales but nearly unanimous critical acclaim. A year later, the Coup's follow-up, Genocide & Juice, continued their agenda of sociopolitical insubordination. Not surprisingly, the Coup again received more support from critics than the record buying public. The next several years saw the Coup go through career-threatening changes. They ended their association with their label, Wild Pitch, and suspended their activity as a band. With the band dormant, Boots went to work for a shipping company but continued his political activism. Among other endeavors, he headed the Young Comrades, a group of social activists whose activities included storming the Oakland City Council. Boots' rap partner, E-Roc, left the group, and Pam continued her DJing. In 1998, the Coup, now a duo of Boots and Pam, resurfaced on the Bay Area independent label Dogday. The result: Steal This Album. Party Music, the Coup's fourth studio effort, was issued in November 2001. Pick a Bigger Weapon followed in April 2006. ~ Mtume Salaam, All Music Guide

    Quite likely the most unapologetically artsy punk-related band since the early days of Sonic Youth -- when Kim Gordon was writing for Artforum, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo worked with Glenn Branca, and underground movie star Richard Edson was their drummer -- Japanther is not in the least bit afraid to get all conceptual 'n' stuff. Japanther was formed in 2001 by Matt Reilly and Ian Vanek, undergrads at New York City's highly regarded art school The Pratt Institute. With Reilly singing while playing a three-stringed bass as Vanek simultaneously attacked a drum kit and a bank of electronic equipment playing found and mutated cassettes, both of them singing into microphones fashioned out of old-fashioned telephone handsets, they're like a more playful and even more self-conscious updating of the late-'70s no wave scene, though a thorough rooting in the skatepunk scene as youngsters keeps things from getting too precious. After a 2001 self-released demo, Japanther debuted with the 2002 EP South of Northport, followed by the full-lengths Leather Wings and Dump the Body in Rikki Lake. After a second EP, The Operating Manual for Life on Earth, and a pair of split EP projects with Sneeze and Viking Club, the albums Master of Pigeons (2005), Wolfenswan (2005), Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty (2006), and Skuffed Up My Huffy (2007) followed. In addition to various multimedia projects with a variety of collaborators, Dump the Body in Rikki Lake and the concept album Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty (a loose retelling of the 1960s cult classic Wild in the Streets) were used as the basis of puppet shows in collaboration with Philip Huber, who designed and controlled the marionettes in the film Being John Malkovich. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

    Though Lushlife describes himself as a “bedroom composer”, the em- cee/producer has been quietly crafting a catalog of sweeping full-lengths that do nothing to betray the dimensions of his small South Philly workspace. His latest, Plateau Vision ̧ finds Lush at his most self- possessed, effectively ignoring the outside world of Tumblr-paced album cycles and blog buzz, to create that rare, contemplative hip-hop LP; one that somehow balances its hazed-out cassette experimentations with the pop-friendly underpinnings of big-room hip-hop.

    Lush pre-empted Plateau Vision with what became one of the most talked-about mixtapes of 2011: a straight-to-cassette burner called, No More Golden Days, which was praised by outlets like Okayplayer and the New York Times, and named ‘Mixtape of the Week’ by Stereogum. Not unlike the mixtape, Plateau Vision expertly incubates ‘60s psych eccentricities, and gauzy low-fi production techniques with ’96-era hip-hop swagger. A-side banger, ‘Big Sur’ (produced by Western Vinyl labelmate, ‘Botany’) finds Lushlife, the emcee, weaving a weirdo hidden-America-as- Philly-slang vibe, while Botany splices together a beat that’s as indebted to J. Dilla as it is to Jandek. By contrast, album closer, "$takk Cheddar Galore, Alwyn Dias" plays like some lost Panda Bear joint, but one where Lush spits over his own stack-harmonies with a rapid-fire flow that touches on Orwellian references and his stress-rap tendencies, all within the same breath.

    While Lush handles much of the production and rhymes on Plateau Vision, as auteur, he brings guest artists and producers into the fabric of this album in just the right ways. Standout cut, ‘"Still I Hear the Word Progress" finds Yonkers super-gangster, and former Bad Boy cohort, Styles P trading thorough “sixteens” with Lush against an at-once disconcerting and supremely poppy 8-bit backdrop. Critically-acclaimed Canadian rapper, Shad, floats past with a melancholy verse over Lushlife’s shimmering reworking of one of Erik Satie’s early 20th century Gymnopedie meditations. And finally, collaborations that were hinted at on the No More Golden Days mixtape, those with Heems of Das Racist, Memphis rap up-start, Cities Aviv, ex-Titus Andronicus garage rocker, Andrew Cedermark, and others, can be heard mastered, and in their original context.
