Sunken Ships is the solo side project of Sybris’s Eric Mahle. Sybris live in the part of the 90′s consumed by dissonant guitars and strange tunings. Sunken Ships don’t stray from the 90′s but seem to lean more on the poppier side of things. Remember all those straight forward pop songs from your, probably, childhood? Kind of like that. Sunken Ships are by no means new to the Chicago scene. It’s the project from former Sybris drummer Eric Mahle, but also features members from My Cold Dead Hand, Quatre Tete and Muchacha. On the band’s Myspace page, they site SST Records and The ’90s in their influenced, and by golly, that sounds just about right. Their crooked, guitar-leaning sound is poppy at times, but also rugged and melancholy. It will definitely transport you back to a time when 120 Minutes was still cool, but still sounds genuine and not an intentionaly throwback.
