Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton is a feature-length documentary about avant-garde Los Angeles-based record label Stones Throw Records. The film weaves together rare concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the artists who put Stones Throw Records on the map. Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton gives an exclusive look into the label’s left-of-center artists, history, culture, and global following. Stones Throw head-honcho PEANUT BUTTER WOLF is headlining a show following the screening and you can bet your ass it's gonna be one of the wildest Sunday dance parties we've had here in ages. • Peanut Butter Wolf

    Peanut Butter Wolf

    Urban

Peanut Butter Wolf got his start in the early 90’s as the DJ/producer for Charizma in San Jose, CA until December 1993 when Charizma lost his life at the age of 20.

After taking a break from music, Wolf eventually started Stones Throw Records in 1996. Charizma’s posthumous “My World Premiere” was the single that launched the label.

These days, PB Wolf is busy building the Stones Throw label and traveling as a DJ/VJ.

  • J-Rocc

    J-Rocc

    Urban

One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-'80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles.

In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib's live shows since the early 2000's, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group's live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla

J Rocc's first album of his own original production, Some Cold Rock Stuf, was released in 2011.

  • Jonwayne

    Jonwayne

    Dance

Jonwayne came onto the Los Angeles music scene by way of the east Los Angeles club Low End Theory circa 2008-09, then emerging as the epicenter of a new generation of hip-hop beat makers: Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Kutmah, Daedelus. Fresh out of high school, Jonwayne jumped in with homemade rap mixtapes and immersed himself in the scene. "It felt like a golden age," he says, "it was very inspiring."

He first became known as a producer, releasing the instrumental albumBowser (2011) – but it was his over-sized skill on the mic that caught the attention of Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf, who signed him to record an album as an MC.

As Jon set to work on his debut rap project, he let his presence be known with a series of tapes: CassetteCassette 2 and Cassette 3. Each was unplanned, the releases prompted by Jon’s prolific output. And by this time even lawyers for the tobacco conglomerate Phillip Morris took notice of Jonwayne, serving him with a cease & desist notice for a cassette that looked like a pack of Marlboros.

Jon Wayne is the MC/producer's birth name. The Hollywood cowboy, John Wayne (real name Marion Morrison) took his famous screen name from Jonwayne's great-great-great-great-great uncle, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a player in the American Revolutionary War. True story. Now Jonwayne's taking back the name - what goes around comes around.

  • KNX

    KNX

    Dance

Knxwledge (aka Knx, and pronounced "knowledge") is a beat maker raised in central New Jersey and Philadelphia, now dialing-it-in at home in Los Angeles. 53-track anthology of his prolific work on Bandcamp was released on Leaving Records - Anthology - and coming soon will be his Stones Throw debut.
