Heralds of the Carolina sound for more than two decades, Steep Canyon Rangers are GRAMMY-winning pioneers who continue to expand the living art of bluegrass while honoring its roots. Their 14th studio album, Morning Shift (released September 8, 2023), was recorded at the historic Hickory Nut Gap Inn in Bat Cave, North Carolina, a setting that reflected the band’s deep connection to Southern Appalachia. Produced by Darrell Scott, the album captures an organic, communal spirit shaped by shared space, trust, and perspective. Opening track “Hominy Valley,” written by banjoist Graham Sharp, reflects the band’s belief in history as something fluid and ongoing, much like their own musical evolution. Hailing from both the Appalachian and Piedmont regions of North Carolina, the Rangers balance traditional bluegrass with broader regional influences that have earned them acclaim well beyond the genre. New member Aaron Burdett adds a soulful, folk-rooted voice to the band, bringing fresh emotional depth to their songwriting. Known for thoughtful collaboration and authentic storytelling, the Rangers have become some of the most influential songwriters in Americana. Over their career, they have released 14 studio albums, collaborated on three albums with Steve Martin, been inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and appeared on major stages worldwide. Their album Nobody Knows You won the GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Album, with multiple additional GRAMMY nominations solidifying their legacy.
