Description
Southern Nights is an intimate Americana songwriter series presented by BlackAmericana Fest, celebrating storytelling, community, and the rich musical roots of New Orleans and the Mississippi River Delta. Curated by Dusky Waters, each evening features original music performed in the round by a powerful lineup of women songwriters, offering a unique glimpse into the heart of their craft.
The night concludes with a special collaborative “superset” where all artists unite on stage to honor one of their musical heroines. On August 10, that tribute is dedicated to the incomparable Roberta Flack—a groundbreaking artist whose fusion of soul, jazz, and folk set a new standard for emotional depth and musical excellence.
Tonight’s featured artists include:
Dusky Waters is a New Orleans–based Americana powerhouse whose music echoes the magic and mourning of the Mississippi River. A master multi-instrumentalist and soulful songwriter, she blends gospel, folk, soul, and pop in high-energy performances that OffBeat calls “beautifully crafted” with “clarion-call vocals.” She is the co-founder of BlackAmericana Fest and curator of the Southern Nights series.
Mia Borders is a genre-blending force in New Orleans soul, funk, rock, and blues. A self-produced artist and founder of Blaxican Records, her electrifying live shows and confident songwriting have landed her on stages from Jazz Fest to the Kennedy Center. Her discography—spanning from Southern Fried Soul to Good Side of Bad—reflects a fearless commitment to storytelling and groove.
Lilli Lewis, known as the “Folk Rock Diva,” fuses gospel, country soul, jazz, and classical roots into expansive, soul-stirring performances. A fierce advocate for equity in roots music, she’s been praised by NPR and Rolling Stone for her albums like Americana and All Is Forgiven. Based in New Orleans, Lewis brings a powerful blend of empathy, activism, and artistry to every stage.
