Jazz Standard welcomes the great jazz multi–instrumentalist Sonny Fortune to our stage. Born in Philadelphia in 1939, he moved to New York in 1967 and quickly found steady work with the groups of Elvin Jones and Mongo Santamaria prior to his 1971–1973 stint with McCoy Tyner. In 1974, Fortune replaced David Liebman in the Miles Davis group for a single fruitful year in which the saxophonist appeared on Miles’ groundbreaking albums Big Fun, Get Up with It, Agharta, and Pangaea. Sonny Fortune has led his own groups since 1975, recording prolifically for various labels including Horizon/A&M, Atlantic, and Blue Note. “Of all of Trane’s lasting contributions, perhaps the greatest to the future of improvised music was his example of spiritual integrity and physical drive. Sonny blows with both.” (Howard Mandel)
