ESG
Renee Scroggins (lead vocals, guitar, hand percussion), Nicole Nicholas (vocals, bass), Nicholas Nicholas (vocals, congas, hand percussion), Marie Scroggins (vocals, congas, hand percussion) and G8 (drummer).
The legendary Bronx-based female funk rock collective ESG set the stage for the whole genres of sound, including post punk and house music. Songs from the group;s early EPs have been so heavily sampled by rap's A-listers (including by Wu0Tang Clan, The Beastie Boys, and MF DOOM) that their sound has become nearly indivisible from Hip-Hop. ESG's Seminal 1983 debut album Come Away with ESG was acknowledged by Pitchfork as one of the 50 best Albums of the 1980s.
ESG are indeed the only group to play the opening night of Manchester's legendary Hacienda, and the closing nights of New York's legendary Paradise Garage. Originally recorded by Factory Records in the U.K. their first EP was produced by Martin Hanett. In the late 1980's they released the telling "Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills". ESG have continued to release their own unique music, and have performed both domestically and internationally to share their creative style of music.
