Alan Scheurman began making music as Santiparro in 2010, after receiving the name from a Wixarika elder during a pilgrimage. Translated as “a lens that sees many things not usually seen,” and also “magnifying glass,” Scheurman suspects it was more a nod to his big glasses than any mystical destiny—though those closest to him might argue otherwise. His first EP of bedroom recordings, Get Well Soon (FM Dust), introduced Santiparro’s introspective and subtly humorous songwriting style, blending modern indie sensibilities with spiritual undertones. After its release, he relocated from Detroit to Brooklyn. In 2015, Gnome Life released Santiparro’s self-produced True Prayer LP, featuring contributions from Will Oldham, Kyp Malone, and others. Later settling in Joshua Tree, he toured occasionally in intimate settings. In 2018, after spending extended periods in the Peruvian Amazon, he wrote the majority of The Talon with producer J Ashley Miller, exploring new sonic territory. That same year, he became a father, and the pace of releases slowed—though a few singles followed. In 2020, he released Shadow Dancer and organized a series of pandemic-era fundraising concerts. A cassette-only cover of Little Wings’ Magic Wand came next via Gnome Life, followed by a 2023 cover of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s Squid Eye. In 2024, he returned with Everywhere You Ever Were—a reflective collection that felt like a homecoming after a decade of creative and personal evolution. New music is currently in development. Unless encountered in a more private context, Santiparro’s live performances remain rare.
