SLIM TWIG is a Toronto native named MAX TURNBULL who tears through more ideas and styles in one record than most bands do throughout their career. Idiosyncratic and chalk full of murky, demented inspiration, TWIG’s self-produced 2012 LP, A Hound At The Helm, was reissued last October on DFA and features string arrangements by none other than OWEN PALLETT. Showcasing his interest in classic songwriting, 60s psych and the friendly oddities of lo-fi home recording, Pitchfork called it "A twilight zone of madness and provocation... Its hard-psych is ugly, alluring carnival music that warps and melts before us just as we begin to trust it. Through it all though, there’s an undercurrent of humor and fun." What could be more fun on a mid-January night?? As they did on their 2013 tour which stopped by the Bottle, TURNBULL is on tour with his wife, MEGHAN REMY, the lone creative (American) force behind U.S. GIRLS. Since 2007, she has pursued a militant approach to her minimalist, lo-fi aesthetic that melds experimental leanings with a pop songwriting prowess that comes hard to find in many DIY circles. Combining a reverence and divergence from classic pop tropes, REMY’s most recent LP Gem, out in fall 2012 via Fat Cat, merges her haunting-yet-soulful vocals with infectious hooks and stark, piercing drum machine beats that Pitchfork hailed for “creating a surprisingly cohesive sound out of no wave's corrosion, glam rock's hedonism, and pop's direct, gut-wrenching emotion.” Chicago duo WAGE open tonight's show, bringing their fucked-up pop mastery to our stage for the very first time tonight. Combining damaged synths with playful rhythms and a dual-vocal attack, WAGE's sole track on bandcamp, "Big Triangle," is a pimply pop ditty that shows promise for the band's future.

    Psychedelic

Slim Twig is the name of a man, not of a band - though he has performed within many idioms including that of a group.

Slim Twig is based in Toronto and is concerned with the recording and performing of popular psychedelic music & vibe generation.

In addition to recording and producing his own records like 'Sof' Sike' & 'A Hound At The Hem', Mr. Twig has also produced the albums 'GEM' & 'U.S. Girls On Kraak' for U.S. Girls, and co-runs the record label Calico Corp. with Meg Remy of that band.

He is involved in other various bands and projects around Toronto.

As a side venture he has performed in the feature films The Tracey Fragments, Dog Pound & Sight Unseen - the last film being a collaboration with his film maker parents which he also scored.

    Pop

Whilst at first glance the name may conjure ‘Volleyball teams and cheerleading squads’ as suggested by 20jazzfunkgreats, others read a military connotation – some kind of legendary all female American crack squad. Whatever the imagery, the first listen suggests a divergent story. In truth, U.S. Girls is the creative force of a lone American woman, Meghan Remy. For the past four years she has pursued her minimalist aesthetic with a militant by-any-means-necessary attitude, merging experimental compositions tracked on borrowed four track recorders with her distinctive photocopy-art visual aesthetic to deliver starkly defined statement LP’s like ‘Introducing…’ & ‘Go Grey’ on Siltbreeze Records.
