Hawaii News Now Jazz Legends Series:
SERGIO MENDES
Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sergio Mendes is one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. His hit single, "Mas Que Nada," is the first Portuguese language song to ever hit Billboard's U.S. Pop chart and Mendes' signature mix of bossa nova and samba and distinctive pop instrumentation have ultimately come to define Brazilian music.
With a career spanning five decades, his enduring influence on the music industry continues to evolve. A three-time Grammy® Award winner, with three additional Grammy nominations, he has recorded more than 35 albums, with numerous gold and platinum albums among them. In 2012, following year, Mendes received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song for "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.
In the '80s, Mendes' popular single, "Never Gonna Let You Go" became a No. 1 Adult Contemporary hit and pop top-10 chart topper. In 1992 Mendes' record Brasileiro was awarded the Grammy® for Best World Music Album, and since then, Mendes has been honored with two Latin Grammy® awards for Best Brazilian Record, Timeless (2006) and Bom Tempo (2010) -- which was also nominated for a 2010 Grammy® award.
Mendes' most iconic album, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2011, joining Bruce Springsteen's legendary Born in The U.S.A., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. in the class of historically significant recordings.
Mendes continues to tour worldwide and maintains his work as a film composer and producer, while also always working on and developing his own album projects.

One common thread weaves throughout the staggeringly diverse tapestry of music that Sergio Mendes has created over his remarkable six-decade career: the spirit of joy.
From his pioneering contributions to the foundations of bossa nova alongside the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim, through the era-defining Latin-pop sound of his iconic group brasil ‘66; his scintillating collaborations with jazz legends like Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Mann to his chart-topping adult contemporary smash “Never Gonna Let You Go;” on through his 21st-century reinvention with the Black-Eyed Peas and John Legend or his Oscar®-nominated theme song from the animated hit “Rio,” an infectious spirit of joy pervades everything Mendes has ushered into the ears of listeners.
The Brazilian legend’s 2020 album is no exception. On “In the Key of Joy,” Mendes looks back the only way he knows how – by once again moving forward. Released to coincide with a spectacular new documentary on his life by acclaimed filmmaker John Scheinfeld (“Chasing Trane,” “Who is Harry Nilsson?”), the album “In the Key of Joy” melds the classic Brazilian, jazz and pop sounds that have long characterized Mendes’ music with stunningly contemporary inspirations that make the album sound at once utterly timeless and wholly of the moment.
The documentary, “Sergio Mendes: In the Key of Joy” is enjoying worldwide release in 2021, after its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2020. Here’s a timeline of the milestones in Sergio’s life and discography , which are wonderful “companion” references to the documentary and chronicle an amazing life and career.
