“Put a knife up to his boner, cut him” with those nine words a trend was born and Scene Queen (along with the genre name she coined, “Bimbocore”) was introduced to the world.
Fast forward a year later, Scene Queen has taken over the world and the Bimbocore movement continues to grow. Boasting sold out tours in the US and the UK, festival appearances at Slam Dunk and Reading/Leeds, multiple magazine covers (including Kerrang!, Rock Sound, and Metal Hammer), and the prestigious Heavy Music Award for Best International Breakthrough Artist, Scene Queen has continued to champion female artists in heavy music and tackle controversial issues that plague the scene.
With her debut album, Hot Singles In Your Area, Scene Queen hopes to expound on the idea of reclaiming your sexuality, confidence, and feeling empowered to express your true self regardless of what anyone will think. “I hope listeners are able to feel safe in their skin with this record like I have,” Scene Queen extends, “Something about not caring what anyone else thinks has done wonders for my confidence and I hope I’m able to spread that and empower others along the way.” The result is an album that is everything Bimbocore has become known for, ramped up by 100.
While Scene Queen has become a divisive and polarizing figure that is the embodiment of female empowerment and sexual freedom; she has built a reputation as someone who holds herself to no boundaries or genre. Leading the scene in pink high heel boots and mini-skirts in a black t-shirt world, she’s as comfortable writing songs about cutting off mysogyny’s manhood as she is screaming obscenities about everyday frustrations into metal breakdowns that quake inside your soul. But it is her tongue-in-cheek wit that sets her apart from other artists in the scene. With nursery-rhyme choruses and pointed ad-libs, Scene Queen cuts deep into the hypocrisy of the patriarchy with a smile that wounds on contact. On her song “18+” Scene Queen tackles the sexual misconduct that ran rampant in the scene that she grew up in. Not afraid to speak the truth, the song ripped shockwaves in the industry and forced people to listen.
Songs like “MILF” - a take on the country genre in a way only Scene Queen could - serves to solidify the idea that bimbocore is any and all genres. “The track came about from sitting with friends and asking ‘what if we took all the most gatekept genres (country and metal) and put them together’,” Scene Queen explains. The result is the most ambitious, cleverly-wrought, earworm that is as fun as it is chaotic and genre-bending.
While Hot Singles In Your Area tells the story of Scene Queen coming into her own and enjoying being single, young, and free, the album reflects a broader meaning as well. The album explores and pays homage to the early internet era as well as all the sex workers who have laid the foundation for Bimbocore to exist. Scene Queen adds,“The album is about having fun with yourself while reclaiming your sexuality.” As an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIAA rights and a fearless crusader against misogyny, body-shaming, and sex-shaming, Scene Queen proves that you can name every song after a different category of pornography and be valiantly sex-positive while doing a two-step into a metal/hardcore breakdown. Bimbocore forever.
