Sonamó is a San Francisco Bay Area band that delivers a dynamic, passionate blend of melodies via hefty doses of funk and acid jazz.
To describe the sound of the band: if Sting and Jamiroquai had a lovechild they would name it Sonamó, and it would be eclectic and open-minded- just like the group’s home base…the City by the Bay.
It all started when Sonamó’s founder Giuseppe Pinto first moved from Italy to the United States in 2010 - as Pinto describes: “When you are transplanted to a new country that’s completely different from where you grew up, there is a big chance of feeling lost and lonely. That’s because leaving behind your family and friends can be daunting, especially if English is not your first language”.
This feeling of solitude reached its peak in 2013- bringing Pinto to a crossroads in his life where he had to choose between either coming back to Italy- or making a drastic change to take back control.
In 2013 he moved to San Francisco, and embraced the city’s culture and open-mindedness, using music as a tool to develop new bonds.
As Pinto mentioned: “[...] my experience in the United States completely changed me. I had to reconsider all my values and understand that there are many ways of doing and seeing things. That’s what I call the American miracle: a huge diversity that brings the best in all of us”.
Finally able to feel at home, the freedom and love in Pinto’s journey were translated into Sonamó after meeting with creative guitarist Trent Berry who says: ”[...] as a kid growing up in the Midwest, creating music with Sonamó was like discovering a lost cousin, almost like a parallel evolution”.
Bass player Bob Menacho and drummer Chris Thalmann joined the band right after, finally completing the intricate puzzle. With the release of their first EP, the band laid down their roots infused of rock, jazz, Latin, and funk from all the band members’ different backgrounds.
Fast forward to now…it’s with the release of I Walk Through, a song about transitioning into a new phase that the sound of the band reaches its maturity. In this song, Sonamó takes a moment to remember where joy and pain co-existed and embrace the unknown with optimistic lenses, believing the best is yet to come.
“Moving to San Francisco made me realize that dreams come true and that does not apply only to music but to every aspect of life if you put your heart and soul into it. Focus on making choices for love, rather than fear”.
