"Alan Zreczny is a force to be reckoned with, draping innovative chords and strumming with narrative poems that can swell from breathy intimacy to epic grandeur, often within the same tune." Radio One Chicago Local Music Radio
Alan Zreczny’s songs are narrative poems set to spirited melodies, which he performs on the guitar and piano, solo and with his band bluefront. Aftershocks is bluefront’s second release, a journey into the reverberation of emotional aftershocks in shimmering melodies and instrumentation. Available on CD and pressed on vinyl by Chicago’s very own Smashed Plastic. Recorded at Electrical Audio, mixed at Garden View Sound Studio by Scott Steinman for Studiomedia Recording. Mastered by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering. bluefront is Zreczny, Jason Steele, guitar, Nick Kabat, drums, Mark Burns, bass.
A Chicago native, the singer-songwriter first picked up a guitar at the age of 10, growing up in a house always filled with music. His love of music and writing remained under the surface while he went to college, law school and then grad school. He went to work at a large corporation as in-house counsel, traveling the world and later moved on to a law firm…but thoughts about creating music were omnipresent. “I always thought of being a musician and writing songs as the most fulfilling modes of self-expression.”
And then, a terrible break-up happened, and a door opened. Zreczny found himself filling up a notebook he had received as a gift with things, “much of which had to do with that relationship.” Zreczny started to test drive playing out at open mic nights. Not long after, Zreczny met Janet Bean (Eleventh Dream Day, Freakwater) when they worked together at the law firm. The two became friends, and during one visit, she saw all the guitar paraphernalia and looked at Zreczny pointedly. “She asked me if I had written any songs and I mentioned the two. She asked to hear them.”
Bean finally wore him down and her reaction was instant. She told Zreczny his songs were beautiful, and then Zreczny couldn’t believe what he was hearing, when Bean asked him to teach her the songs so she could play the at her next show. And then asked him to join her and her band on stage, which he has done several times now including her solo release party.
From there, it was no turning back. Zreczny has been seen at Uncommon Ground, Subterranean and the popular Old Town Art Fair. He recorded his first album The Arbor Sessions (guitarist Jason Steele was integral on this debut), and has appeared on WGN radio, Chicago Underground.
