Opening night on our main stage at Moe's! After a 18 months of darkness, we're opening the main stage with a sizzling hot double bill. From guitar-driven, high-energy indie blues of newly minted, Austin-based and Black Denim recording artist Zach Person, to the soul-soaked, blues-based grooves of Ron Artis II, we're in for a special night! Local singer-songwriter Justin Hambly to open the show.

Ron Artis II

To say that Ron Artis II plays music from his heart and soul would be a bit of understatement. With his family upbringing and incredible early success, you may even say it has been pre-ordained. So how does one of the great musical talents of his generation come seemingly out of nowhere? Well, that part of the mystery is easy to solve. He’s been paradise’s best kept secret for years and now he’s finally making big waves on the mainland and beyond.

Ron moved to Oahu, Hawaii with his family when he was only four years old. And what a prodigious family it is! He is one of eleven total children, all of whom grew up immersed in a creative and religious household led by his musically gifted parents. Ron explains “My mother is a beautiful singer and my biggest influence on my approach to singing. My father was always the performer, the writer and arranger.”

While developing his multi-instrumental prowess playing in the Artis Family Band, Ron quickly took to piano and guitar as his main modes of expression. His mastery of both—in addition to numerous other instruments—quickly made evident that he was special. As he got older and played more around Oahu, others quickly recognized his gifts as well. Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Jack Johnson, Jake Shimabukuro and many others recognized the incredible talent that was taking root on their isolated island paradise. Ron has gone on to play with all of them and more across Hawaii’s most prestigious venues with his own band that he put together (featuring brother Stevon on drums) aptly called, "The Truth."

Ron has gone on to play with all of them and more across Hawaii’s most prestigious venues with his own band that he put together (featuring brother Stevon on drums) aptly called, "The Truth."

Those opportunities led to more exposure to artists from the mainland who, while they were touring the islands, all immediately recognized the unique talent they were witnessing. Booker T Jones, Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce) and G Love all invited (and in some cases demanded) Ron to collaborate and encouraged him to share his music with the broader world. This support aligned perfectly with Ron's vision for his music: "To me, music is about giving. When I'm performing, I let go of everything. I look out into an audience and feel: 'What do they need right now?' We as artists have been given a gift and gifts are meant to be shared."

Which catches us back up to today. Ron has played sell out shows from coast to coast with his long list of collaborators and more. His debut full length album “Soul Street” dropped in early April, 2020 and has already garnered wide critical praise. The album crystallizes the full range of Ron’s influences—deep Delta Blues and Gospel, plus Northern Soul and R&B, alongside in-depth and personal lyrics—into a tight collection of fresh yet familiar songs that are at once urgent and timeless.

It is becoming readily apparent that the rest of the world will be finding out soon enough about this incredible talent from the remote island in the middle of the Pacific. So get ready for the tidal wave of heart and soul music that is Ron Artis II & The Truth as they come to a city near you!

"What else can I say, this young man is hot!" -Buddy Guy

Zach Person is an American recording artist and guitarist based in Austin, Texas, who is considered to be "The future of American indie music -the illegitimate love child of The Black Keys and Lenny Kravitz."  Zach is a House of Blues Music Forward Foundation Alumnus known for his contemporary, pop rock approach to blues and American roots music.

In 2018, Zach signed an exclusive management deal with industry veteran, Christopher Durst, who immediately recruited Will Loconto (Information Society/T-4-2) to produce Person’s debut EP.  Together, they developed a unique style that encompasses the raw, grit and soul associated with Texas, along with the modern elements and sounds of pop radio.

Zach Person began touring throughout the United States and Canada in 2018, making special appearances at the Toronto International Film Festival and Amazon’s AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas.  In 2019, Person headlined numerous events for Fairmont Hotels, Firefly Aerospace, GitHub, SXSW, and AT&T.  After an appearance at Intersect Music Festival with Foo Fighters, Anderson Paak, Beck, and HER, Person returned home to Austin, Texas to wrap production of his debut EP.

Upon completion in 2020, Person’s manager, Christopher Durst, and music producer, Will Loconto, expressed interest in co-founding a record label to help protect Person’s intellectual property.  Together, they formed BlackDenim Records, positioning Person as the label’s flagship artist, and, unapologetically, making him the first, unreleased recording artist to have ever received an equity position in a record label for signing.

In late 2020, Person began recording his debut, self-titled full length LP with his longtime musical collaborator and drummer, Jake Wybe, who was also featured on Person’s first release.  Zach Person’s debut LP includes 11 original tracks, 5 of which were included on his debut EP -“Can’t Stop Running”, “Send Me Away”, “Let Me Know”, “Back To Me”, and “All Shook Up”, a wildly-electric cover of Elvis Presley’s classic hit song.  During the recording of Person’s debut LP, the label partners then co-founded BlackDenim Publishing, creating a secondary protective shelter for Person’s publishing.  The collective formation of BlackDenim Records and BlackDenim Publishing successfully positioned the partners to sign and develop young, indie rock, pop, and blues-inspired artists.

In January 2021, Person finished recording his highly-anticipated debut LP and immediately began production on a series of music videos to support his LP release, which dropped April 2, 2021.  Person’s first European/UK tour is scheduled for summer 2021, with plans to visit The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, and England.

    Early Life and Career Beginnings

Zach Person was born in Cumberland County, New Jersey, but lived most of his early childhood in Southern Pines, North Carolina, where he first began taking guitar lessons with Baxter Clement at Casino Guitars.  Interestingly, Person’s longtime musical collaborator and drummer, Jake Wyble, was also born in Cumberland County, New Jersey, but the two future musicians never actually knew each other, until a chance meeting in Austin, Texas in 2017, where each of the performers had moved to pursue music.

At age 13, Person moved to Houston, Texas, continued his musical studies, and soon began performing at popular, local music venues.  In 2016, Person was launched into the public eye, after competing on the 15th season of American Idol; he quickly became a favorite with celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, who was quoted as saying, "He's from another time," and Keith Urban, who said, "You've got your own style.”

This experience gave Person his first taste of the industry, and significantly contributed to his overall growth as a vocalist.  Following American Idol, Person was openly embraced by the Texas music scene, becoming a House of Blues Music Forward Foundation Alumnus, and representing the Houston Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge, a competition featuring some of the foremost blues artists from around the world.  The exposure he received from these opportunities would later provide Person the chance to share stages with legendary acts such as Robert Cray and Buddy Guy, who once said, “What can I say, this young man is hot!”
