Description
Multi-instrumentalist Rob Wagner lived in New Orleans for 15 years in the 1990s and early 2000s as a fixture at Frenchmen Street clubs performing in styles from funk to klezmer to modal/free jazz before moving to NYC after Hurricane Katrina. Wagner is a master player on tenor & soprano saxophones, as well as clarinet. With his sense of drama, using subtleties of pitch and dynamics to good ends, his tunes are attractively lyrical and open.
Tonight, he presents the Rob Wagner Trio, featuring:
Rob Wagner - saxophones
James Singleton - bass
Johnny Vidacovich - drums
MORE ABOUT ROB WAGNER:
Rob Wagner was a fixture on Frenchmen Street from the beginning of the 1990s scene up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was a mainstay of the popular bands Iris May Tango, New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, Mas Mamones, and with his jazz trio he performed every Monday night at D.B.A. Wagner lived in Brooklyn from 2006 until more recently, but he returned to New Orleans often to perform with Ven Pa Ca flamenco group, the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, the Rob Wagner Trio, and his on-going collaboration with Hamid Drake, the world famous jazz and creative music drummer from Chicago.
Wagner won the Big Easy "Emerging Artist" Award in 2002 and has recorded four critically acclaimed albums on the Valid Records label that have raised his profile on the national jazz scene. While he mostly flies under the radar of the New Orleans jazz world, the jazz press has taken notice. His 2007 release ROB WAGNER TRIO Featuring HAMID DRAKE and NOBU OZAKI was awarded four stars in Downbeat Magazine and named to numerous Top 10 best of the year lists that year.
