    Rexx Life Raj

    West Coast Rap

RexxLifeRaj: Berkeley, California Rapper/ producer/ vocalist Rexx Life Raj (born Faraji Wright) found his love for music by way of his church upbringing and the encouragement of his mother, Linda. While Linda nurtured his creativity, Raj’s father Odis taught him the beauty and challenges of being black as well as the value of hard work. In his youth, Raj endured the death of his best friend Devin as well as the incarceration of his close confidant Ronnie. Out of creativity, consciousness, and adversity were born the musical stylings of Rexx Life Raj.

Though music may have been his first love, it was not the only avenue at which Raj excelled. His natural athletic ability and incredible work ethic saw him garner a full scholarship from Berkeley High to Division 1 football powerhouse, Boise State University. Raj played offensive line for Boise State from 2008-2012, using football as a vehicle to gain his college education. Amidst questions of why he didn’t turn pro, Raj graduated from Boise with a degree in Communications and subsequently turned his full attention to his budding music career.

This proved the right move, as Raj’s talent built him a buzz that has seen him collaborate with and garner cosigns from artists such as Pharrel, Russ , G-Eazy, Scott Storch, and Goapele. Furthermore, Raj’s music has earned him accolades from press outlets such as Pitchfork, FADER, Noisey, HotNewHipHop, DJBooth, TeamBackPack, GoodMusicAllDay, Berkelyside and more.

The duality of Berkeley is that it is home to an incredible art culture that promotes creativity, individuality and freedom. Simultaneously, Berkeley is a city with history steeped in activism.. where individuals have come together to affect social change.

Creative but conscious. Free but moral.

Rexx Life Raj’s epitomizes this duality. His music flows seamlessly from wildly hilarious anecdotes on the trivial to sharply poignant observations on life’s daily struggles.

    Soul

Iman Europe is a bi-coastal singer/rapper/songwriter born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, California. With influences from both coasts, Europe blends the smooth, soulful sounds of the West with the rugged raps of the East, creating her own unique fusion. Her music is based on the realities that the people of her generation face, yet relatable to all. Often compared to the likes of Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Iman Europe is an artist with timeless aesthetic value.

    DJ Flow & Mani Draper

    Hip-Hop/Rap

Up until recently, Richmond, California’s own Mani Draper, was the best kept secret in hip hop. Fortunately for Draper, and for the state of hip hop itself, the secret’s starting to get out. With just two albums under his belt, and a third in the works, Draper has completely revamped his production and honed his lyrical skills to create a sound uniquely his own. What’s so fascinating about Draper’s evolution is, despite braggadocio and machismo being so integral to the rap game, the man remains humble and modest–even as the accolades come pouring in. At the nexus of Mani Draper’s socio-political awareness, strong work ethic and sense of personal responsibility, exists a man who must be able to look himself in the mirror – both the night of and the morning after. Draper seems unable to abide the hypocritical hedonism of rhymes glorifying dope, guns and fucking that get thrown in the face of so many people who are suffering. For many artists this dichotomy would lead to a tortured existence but, when speaking to Draper earlier this year, I found the rapper to be passionate, engaged and ready to add his voice to the national discourse at a time when a voice like his is crucial to the conversation.

JuLia Lewis: Benjamin Falik is ambivalent about the idea of personal fame.

That's one reason the  producer, songwriter and beatmaker chose the name Julia Lewis as a professional pseudonym: "It's little bit of smoke and mirrors," admits Falik, a Berkeley native. "I like playing with people's expectations." That drive to upend the expected is a through line in Falik's work, as his reputation for making soulful dance music emotional, human productions and remixes that blend hip-hop and electronic elements with a shot of his first love, jazz has spread throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
