Jah Mex and The Translators
Reggae
Reggae music gives Jah Mex a feeling he's continued to express for over 25 years as a keyboardist, songwriter and vocalist. California born and raised, learning and performing with local legends, and international icons, Jah Mex has developed a sound that offers something fresh to roots reggae lovers.
His first two albums, Firm Soundation (2009) and Soul Garden Roots Version (2015) were produced by reggae bass legend, Fully Fullwood. Both releases feature members of the Soul Syndicate including Santa Davis, Tony Chin and Fully Fullwood. Jah Mex was later featured on keyboards and vocals for three EPs from The Soul Syndicate All Stars, released in 2023 and 2024.
Later in 2024, Jah Mex collaborated with producer, DM Kahn, along with guitarist Albert Hurtado, for the single, “Rootsman Style”. It was distributed in Europe by Creation Rebel Sound System and pressed on 7-inch-vinyl at Music House in London. Legendary British radio host, David Rodigan featured “Rootsman Style” on BBC 1Xtra. The tune was also embraced by many selectors and collectors in San Diego,
As of January 2026, Jah Mex is finishing a year long project called Ephphatha. This 5-song-EP produced by DM Kahn is an international collaboration, with the Roots Makers out of France and Canada, and Mex in the United States. Ephphatha, which means “be opened”, is slated for vinyl and digital release in summer 2026.
Jah Mex's live performance is supported by The Translators, a backing band since 2008, hosting some of the best reggae players from So-Cal. After taking quite a long break, Jah Mex assembled the current line up featuring Ian Yzerman on bass, Turri on drums, Albert Hurtado on guitar & back up vocals, and Jah Mex on keys & lead vocals. It's a small band with a big sound along with a warm connection to the audience.
Outside of his own music, Jah Mex has a passion for playing keyboards with other artists. He's worked with reggae legends including Eek A Mouse, Mighty Diamonds, Junior Reid, The Melodians, Boom Shaka, Marcia Griffiths, Lloyd Hemmings, Cornell Campbell, Tippa Irie, The Rastafarians, Kanakamon, Tristan Palma, Carlton Livingston, and also subbed in for Steel Pulse's keyboardist, Selwyn Brown.
Mex is also a long time member on keyboards for Los Angeles based reggae group, Lesterfari & Kings Music. Living in San Clemente, the southern tip of Orange County, Jah Mex considers San Diego a ‘home away from home’, collaborating on keyboards with talented local bands, Mara Sulu & The Resistance, Wassie Posse, and Revival.
Why the name “Jah Mex”? It was given by a close friend from Jamaica named Pablo. Jah Mex took a piece of Pablo's Jerk chicken off the grill and made tacos for them. After a few bites, Pablo issued the name and it stuck.
Born in Whittier, California as Adam Arredondo, Mex also takes pride in his Mexican heritage from both parents. He grew up in Orange County in the 80's and 90's where he was teased by students at school for being brown. Some of the other brown kids argued he wasn't Mexican because he couldn't speak Spanish. A struggle with identity would soon lead to self discovery shortly after Jah Mex discovered reggae music.
Other studio projects from Jah Mex Include works with veteran studio and touring musician from Philadelphia, Chuck Treece. The two produced an EP called The Magician by Lucian Lianti in 2017 and a single by Jah Mex called “Changes” in 2016. Treece was also featured on an EP produced by Mex calledDub Clemente in 2021.
From 2022-2023 Jah Mex spent a lot of hours at Tube Town Studio with engineer and music artist, Hayden Hansen. There Mex recorded singles “Narrow Gates”, a reggae salute to Roy Ayer’s “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”“, and a rocksteady track called “Even Number”. He also toured with Hayden’s band, Tunnel Vision on keyboards during that same period.
Although the rhythm of life is not always musical, Mex chooses to stay connected to the gifts he attributes from The Most High. He also credits his wife Lisset, who also designs most of his artwork, and his family and friends who have always believed.
