Description
The son of saxophone bellwether John Coltrane and fusion paragon Turiya Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane was not yet two years old when his father died in July 1967. But in the subsequent five decades, he has inherited and cherished the call to push jazz ahead, honoring and preserving its past while ever aiming for its next step. In the early 1990s, he began playing with a host of jazz greats including drummer Elvin Jones and saxophonist Steve Coleman; beginning with Moving Pictures (1998), his own albums have embraced a searching approach to his instrument while reconsidering song structures, warping expectations, and rewriting rules. The music of Ravi Coltrane is a strong and vibrant connector linking the past, present, and future of jazz. “Whether he was conjuring an air of stillness and contemplation or churning up great waves of rhythmic energy, whether his sound was softly introspective or as big as all outdoors, Coltrane showed the breadth of his vision and the acuity of his thoughts.” (Howard Reich, performance review for the Chicago Tribune, 4.5.2019)

As a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and label entrepreneur, Ravi Coltrane is a true renaissance man of the 21st century jazz. He’s released six albums as a leader, including his latest Spirit Flame (Blue Note, 2012). For the past two years, he’s hosted the “Ravi Coltrane Invitational” on our stage with a diverse array of guest musicians. This week, however, he returns to Jazz Standard with an all–star quintet including trumpeter Ralph Alessi and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. “The ethereal quality of his tone renders even his most intense, intricate passagework immensely attractive and unintimidating,” wrote Howard Reich in The Chicago Tribune (6/20/2014). “So regardless of how explosively he may be playing or how remote his harmonic journeys may become, the sheer luster of his sound and nimbleness of his technique play gently on the ear.”
