Description
Three–time GRAMMY Award nominee Ravi Coltrane has worked as a sideman with such leaders as Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, and Geri Allen; recorded six noteworthy albums as a leader, and founded the independent record label RKM. His most recent release, In Movement (ECM, 2016), was a career–high collaboration with drummer Jack DeJohnette and Matthew Garrison on electric bass and electronics; it included “a roiling, spontaneous duo for drums and sopranino saxophone (“Rashied”)…that feels revelatory and ablaze.” (Nate Chinen, NYT, 5.4.2016) This week, Ravi Coltrane brings his superb quartet to the stand for six nights of creative musical invention. “At its best, live jazz is one of the most wondrous highs in the world; Coltrane and company proved it many times over.” (Carlos Valladares, San Francisco Chronicle, 8.3.2017)

As a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and label entrepreneur, Ravi Coltrane is a true renaissance man of the 21st century jazz. He’s released six albums as a leader, including his latest Spirit Flame (Blue Note, 2012). For the past two years, he’s hosted the “Ravi Coltrane Invitational” on our stage with a diverse array of guest musicians. This week, however, he returns to Jazz Standard with an all–star quintet including trumpeter Ralph Alessi and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. “The ethereal quality of his tone renders even his most intense, intricate passagework immensely attractive and unintimidating,” wrote Howard Reich in The Chicago Tribune (6/20/2014). “So regardless of how explosively he may be playing or how remote his harmonic journeys may become, the sheer luster of his sound and nimbleness of his technique play gently on the ear.”
