Rapsody is one of hip-hop’s most respected storytellers and lyricists, celebrated for her technical mastery, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to truth in her music. Hailing from Snow Hill, North Carolina, she has built an acclaimed career spanning more than a decade, earning recognition alongside some of the genre’s most revered voices, including Kendrick Lamar, Black Thought, and Mac Miller.
Her breakthrough moments include a GRAMMY-nominated appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, the critically acclaimed Laila’s Wisdom, which earned GRAMMY nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, and Eve, her groundbreaking tribute to Black women and their cultural impact. Throughout her career, Rapsody has been honored as BET Hip Hop Awards’ Lyricist of the Year, named to EBONY’s Power 100, and recognized by XXL as one of the 20 Greatest Female Rappers of All Time.
In 2024, Rapsody entered a new creative chapter with Please Don’t Cry, a deeply personal and vulnerable album featuring collaborations with Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, Phylicia Rashad, Alex Isley, and Baby Tate. The project further cemented her reputation as one of music’s most compelling voices and was followed by her first GRAMMY win for “3:AM”. Beyond music, she has performed alongside cultural icons including Aretha Franklin and Robert Glasper, and President Barack Obama invited her to participate in a White House roundtable on criminal justice reform. With God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, the Snow Hill native steps into a place of reclamation —of her voice, her identity, and a deeper connection to the woman she has become. If Please Don’t Cry revealed a more personal, unguarded side of Rapsody, the new record feels like a celebration of what she found in that state of introspection.
