Description
Among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time, the GRAMMY Award–winning pianist and composer Danilo Pérez is widely acclaimed both for his work with the Wayne Shorter band and as a bandleader and recording artist. In his previous appearance on our stage, Danilo Pérez reprised the music from his classic album Panamonk (Impulse!, 1996); now he returns in a very special collaboration with two other established leaders, award–winning saxophonist Chris Potter and former SFJAZZ Collective trumpeter Avishai Cohen. This unit began working together as part of Pérez’s “Jazz 100” tour celebrating the centennials of Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Mongo Santamaria and Thelonious Monk; the trio discovered a uniquely rewarding musical and personal bond, and elected to reconvene after the tour to further explore their unmistakable chemistry. Fueled by the nonpareil rhythm section of Larry Grenadier (bass) and Nate Smith (drums), the burners will be turned up to “High” this week – only at Jazz Standard!

Drummer, bandleader, composer, and producer, Nate Smith and his group Kinfolk create what Smith calls “a chilled-out, R&B-informed take on jazz” that is as musical as it is accessible. Nate is featured regularly with the groups of bassist Dave Holland and saxophonist Chris Potter, among others. His own compositions have been heard on PBS and the Discovery Channel, and he recently served as faculty leader for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program sponsored by the Kennedy Center.
