Description
Philip Manuel is a distinguished New Orleans jazz vocalist whose poised, polished, and gracefully lithe voice has captivated audiences for more than three decades. Greatly influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Manuel brings warmth, elegance, and emotional depth to every performance. His rich baritone has been heard in countless settings—from jingles and commercials to international tours with Terence Blanchard and Bill Summers. Encouraged early on by Aaron Neville to take the leap into live performance, Manuel has since graced stages from New York to Los Angeles, and from Portugal to Paris, performing alongside some of the biggest names in jazz.
Often described as dramatic, warm, and full of soul, Manuel’s voice is said to charm and seduce with an effortless range and refined phrasing. His 2019 album PM showcases him at his soulful R&B best, featuring twelve original compositions and marking a bold departure from his jazz-centered catalog. Beyond music, Manuel is also an accomplished actor, writer, and sought-after voiceover talent, with appearances in classic New Orleans films such as Cane River and The Big Uneasy—further highlighting the breadth of his artistic reach.
Tonight, Manuel pays tribute to late great Nat King Cole (1919-1965), one of the most influential vocalists and pianists of the 20th century. Celebrated for his velvety baritone and refined elegance, Cole's climbed to fame first as a jazz pianist and later as a crossover pop icon, he delivered timeless classics like “Unforgettable” and “The Christmas Song” that continue to resonate across generations. As one of the first Black artists to host a nationally televised variety show, Cole also broke racial barriers in American entertainment. His smooth phrasing, warmth, and sophistication shaped the sound of modern vocal jazz and pop, leaving a legacy that still inspires singers around the world.
