Description
Philip Manuel is a distinguished New Orleans jazz vocalist whose poised, polished voice has captivated audiences for more than three decades. Influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, he brings warmth, elegance, and emotional depth to every performance. His rich baritone has been heard everywhere from commercials and jingles to international tours with Terence Blanchard and Bill Summers. Encouraged early on by Aaron Neville, Manuel has performed on stages from New York and Los Angeles to Portugal and Paris alongside many of jazz’s leading artists. His 2019 album PM highlights his soulful R&B side with twelve original songs. Also an actor, writer, and voiceover artist, he has appeared in New Orleans films such as Cane River and The Big Uneasy.
Brian Blade is one of the most respected and versatile drummers in modern jazz. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Blade is celebrated for his deeply musical, expressive style and his ability to move seamlessly between jazz, folk, rock, and gospel traditions. He rose to prominence in the 1990s working with artists such as Joshua Redman, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most sensitive and creative drummers of his generation.
Blade is also the leader of the Brian Blade Fellowship Band, an acclaimed ensemble known for its lyrical compositions and collective improvisation. Beyond jazz, he has collaborated with artists across genres, including Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Emmylou Harris. With his dynamic touch and deep musicality, Blade continues to be a defining voice in contemporary music.
Tonight, Blade and Manuel pays tribute to Nat King Cole, the legendary vocalist and pianist whose velvety baritone and timeless classics like “Unforgettable” and “The Christmas Song” helped shape modern vocal jazz and pop while breaking racial barriers as one of the first Black hosts of a national TV variety show.
