Marjane grows up in Tehran during the Iranian Revolution before leaving home for Europe, where distance only deepens her connection to the country she left behind.  Marjane Satrapi insisted on adapting her own graphic memoir rather than handing it to another filmmaker. The film remains effectively banned in Iran.
