An Empty Bottle 25th Anniversary Show featuring Pelican and Wolf Eyes with Sweet Cobra.
Chicago’s own instrumental rock gods PELICAN are returning to us tonight to help celebrate the big 25th Anniversary AGAIN. The four-piece, now scattered across the USA, will be making their sixteenth appearance on the Bottle stage tonight and it's an honor to welcome them back. With a ferocious velocity, they've continuously affirmed their spot as one of the most crushing instrumental bands today.
We haven't seen WOLF EYES here for about a year and a half now. There’s no better comeback they could have made than a co-headlining monster show with PELICAN. Since the late 90s, Michigan trio WOLF EYES have been known to create harsh and hypnotic electronic landscapes that merge the frenzied energy of hardcore with the nihilistic menace of early industrial and noise. A homemade atomic bomb, the group has toured constantly since the early 2000s and their unfathomably prolific output has garnered a strong cult following, as well as a new generation of curious listeners. WOLF EYES most recent record, Undertow, released this year on their own record label, Lower Floor, finds the Detroit noise trio a bit tamer than usual, as they apply a wrecking ball to the spacious frameworks of world music, ambient, and even reggae.
The opening set tonight comes from SWEET COBRA, a trio of Chicagoans that make some of our favorite skull-crushing rock, has remained a cornerstone of Chicago's heavy music scene for over ten years now. Consistently bashing us against the wall and throwing us to the gutter, SWEET COBRA combine plodding, ominous riffs with thunderous drums and caveman vocals, turning it up to 11 for a whole new level of ass-kickery.
