Description
Established in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Palmyra captures the collective spirit of three Virginia natives: Teddy Chipouras, Mānoa Bell, and Sasha Landon. Palmyra straddles at least two musical worlds. They are, on one hand, a band from the South that plays traditional instruments and indeed once lived in the old-time locus of Floyd, Virginia. Comparisons to and a kinship with The Avett Brothers and even Old Crow Medicine Show are inevitable. On the other hand, Palmyra writes about grief, gender dysphoria and identity, and coming of age in songs that flirt with soul, post-rock, and even emo; the South, too, is the place of My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Cat Power, and now, Palmyra. The band’s first full length LP, Restless, is out now on Oh Boy Records. Framed by moments of struggle, solidarity, and hard-won growth, Restless is an unqualified ringer for anyone who loves the space where the roar of indie rock collides with raw folk.

Paul Kalil and the Local Professionals: Paul Kalil is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Evanston, Illinois. He writes songs you’ll remember and is surrounded by some of the top rock musicians in the Chicago area. Kalil has been the singer/songwriter/guitarist for rock bands in Chicago (Snow Globe Mules) and Detroit (Pong Star). In the 1990s, Paul fronted acoustic acts (The Trousers, NDH) that played around Seattle, Portland and Eugene, Oregon.
March 3 at SPACE marks the release of Damaged Novelties, by Paul Kalil and the Local Professionals. On the album, Paul is backed by Chicago-area legends Jason Narducy (Split Single, Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate), Steve Dawson (Dolly Varden, Funeral Bonsai Wedding), Matt Walker (Morrissey, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Filter), Nora O’Connor (Decemberists, Neko Case, New Pornographers), Josh Gilbert (Live.In.Lover, Snow Globe Mules), and Vijay Tellis Nayak (Kick the Cat, Jennifer Hudson). Damaged Novelties blends the expert musicianship of the Local Professionals with thoughtful lyrics and choruses that will get stuck in your head.
